Summer Jobs
Construction work is a popular summer job for high school and college age boys for a number of reasons. One, it is the kind of work that one can pretty easily pick up on a temporary basis, and tends to yield good work hours. Employers on a construction site have the ability to hire on extra hands on a project, or know that they will only need certain kinds of labor for a limited time, making them ideal for those who only have a few months to work before getting back to school.
There is also the reality that working construction is good manual labor that builds strength and muscle, something that some, but certainly not all, boys of this age are interested in. It is a job that implies a certain amount of manhood, and this is something that adolescent boys are striving towards already. For many, construction as a summer job is just that- a summer job- but for others, it can be the beginning of a career or interest. If nothing else, it teaches the value of hard work.
